The Joy of Looking Closely

She tried to keep her eyes closed.

She wanted to walk through the world blind,

she thought life would be easier that way.

She kept bumping into

people

sharp edges

open doors.

Still she refused to look,

afraid of what she might see.

So she didn’t notice the one

who walked along side her

observing everything

the way a child watches,

wide-eyed

unguarded curiosity

and

wonder.

Then one day

she felt brave –

she opened one eye slowly

then the other.

She squinted in the sudden light,

adjusting.

She

saw

her self.
